Asparagus is a hardy perennial that can remain viable for 10-20 years. If your plants are properly cared for, they should continue to grow bigger and produce more sprouts than the previous year.
Asparagus needs a fertile, well-draining soil, so combine a good quality compost into your soil mix. Space the ferns approx 50cm apart in a row and approx 20cm between the rows. They also do well in a decent size container or pot.
As the plant grows, cover the crown with soil and keep it moist, do not overwater or drown the plant and remember to feed in spring with a good quality fertiliser.
You should not harvest the plant until its third year. This allows the plant to form its ferns and redirect energy back into the plant. Cut the ferns down to approx 5cm tall in the late autumn.
In its 3rd year, you can start regularly harvesting the asparagus spears. The season usually lasts around 8-12 weeks.
Cut the asparagus spears approx 4cm below the ground surface and approx 4cm above the crown using a sharp, clean blade.
Our seedling plugs & 12cm pots are approximately 3 months old.
Our 20cm pots are approximately 24 months old.
